Centrifugal pumps are the most common low pressure pumps. Used to move fluids by converting the rotary motion of an impeller to accelerating the fluid around the outside of a pumping chamber. This fluid is usually drawn into the pump from a front inlet and discharged into the system out a side discharge port that can be positioned on any side. Pressures are measured in feet of head which is a sum total of suction lift and discharge lift and plumbing losses. At some point as lift increases and flow decreases the flow "stales" and stops and pump overheats.
Usually used in high volume low psi applications such as fluid transfer, flood control and fire fighting. Pumps can be vertical or horizontal, gas engine or electric motor driven and sealed motor submersible. Construction can be plastic, cast iron, brass, bronze or stainless steel.
Other types of pumps for low psi are diaphragm, gear and roller. usually at small volumes for chemical application and misting.
